For Grundfos, a water and climate solutions company, World Water Day is an important annual event – an opportunity to focus on the vital role that water plays in our everyday existence, and the challenges we face in protecting this most valuable of the world’s resources.
On March 22nd every year, company employees take part in a range of activities designed to highlight our growing water supply problems and show that each and every one of us can help, whether by protecting our existing supplies and using water more sparingly or through more efficient domestic water supply systems.
In the UAE, where water supply problems are at their most acute, mangroves are one of our most effective weapons in preserving water quality and fighting climate change. They trap and convert up to five times more atmospheric carbon dioxide than other trees, filter out pollutants from our water and help to protect our shorelines from erosion.

But with large areas of our mangrove forests deteriorating, the race is now on to rehabilitate and reinstate damaged areas.
With this year’s World Water Day aiming to focus attention on the importance of groundwater and its vital role in sanitation systems, agriculture, industry, ecosystems and climate change adaptation, Grundfos Gulf Distribution was happy to sponsor a team of employees to support a special mangrove planting initiative at Ajman, as part of the UAE’s recent COP 26 commitment to almost triple its mangrove forests by 2030 with an additional 100 million tree plantings.
Combining a beach clean-up with new mangrove planting, the team undertook a full day of activity, including a kayak exploration of the mangrove ecosystem, and gained valuable insight into the crucial role it plays in maintaining the local ecological balance and environmental sustainability.
“As a company, Grundfos is a leading supporter and advocate for United Nations Sustainable Development Goals SDG 6 and SDG13 which aim to bring fresh water to all and address global warming”, said Hasan Avci, Company Director, Grundfos Middle East. “We are deeply involved in projects around the world that improve water sustainability and bring fresh water supplies for the first time to remote and deprived communities.

“But we believe that solving the water problem is a challenge for every one of us. We are truly committed to supporting our push for positive change towards sustainability, not just in buildings and in our advanced solutions, but in every aspect of daily life.  Grundfos was therefore delighted to support the team in their project.
“The event was very successful, with more than 300 kilos of plastic and other damaging and unsightly rubbish collected to improve the appearance of the shore area, and close to a hundred new Mangrove trees planted to support the COP 26 target, which, if achieved, will make the UAE the global leader in nature-based climate change solutions.
